The MV Sycamore will soon support a range of Navy Training activities with the assistance of Teekay Shipping (Australia) Pty Ltd.

A Defence spokesperson advised Defence + Industry Magazine today, that the contract for the provision of a civilian crew and in-service support and maintenance for the multi-role aviation training vessel (MATV), was awarded to Teekay Australia on 9 June through an open tender process.

The MV Sycamore MATV will have a contracted civilian core crew of 17 personnel which will be supplemented across the range of training activities by Australian Defence Force and other government personnel as required.

As previously reported, the MV Sycamore arrived in Sydney on the 26th of June 2017, the multi-role aviation training vessel (MATV) has been acquired to support a range of Navy training activities including initial helicopter deck landing qualifications, as well as other Navy mariner skills training, such as at sea familiarisation, practice weapon recovery, navigation training and limited fleet support duties.

A Defence spokesperson also advised Defence + Industry Magazine that MV Sycamore will commence first-of-class flight trials (FOCFTs) for the helicopter aircrew training system (HATS) in the latter part of 2017 and will be available to train the first HATS students in 2018.

In addition to the EC135 helicopter for HATS, current scoping will authorise the MATV to also operate MRH-90 and MH-60R helicopters. The FOCFTs for these additional aircraft types are currently scheduled for 2018.
