Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Christopher Pyne MP, observed the live firing, which saw the contenders for LAND 400 Phase 2, the Rheinmetall Boxer CRV and the BAE Systems Australia Patria AMV35, test their weapons.

These trials, and the eventual acquisition of a system, will result in the purchase of 225 combat reconnaissance vehicles to replace the Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV) that is currently in service.

On 28 July 2016, Defence announced that BAE Systems Australia and Rheinmetall were been shortlisted to participate in the Risk Mitigation Activity, which is this second stage of the tender evaluation process.

Rheinmetall offered the Boxer Multi Role Armoured Vehicle integrated with the Rheinmetall Lance turret, while BAE Systems Australia teamed with Patria of Finland to offer the Patria Armoured Modular Vehicle, integrated with the BAE Hägglunds E35 turret.

On 19 August 2016, Defence signed Risk Mitigation Activity contracts with BAE Systems Australia and Rheinmetall. The Risk Mitigation Activity encompasses a one year test and evaluation program in conjunction with cost and capability trade-off assessments, the development of Australian Industry Capability Plans reflecting differing levels of Australian involvement, and the development of contract documentation including specifications and schedules.

Two vehicles from each tenderer have been delivered to Defence, which is depicted in our video; they are currently being used for Crew Conversion Training in the Puckapunyal Military Area, near Seymour in Victoria
